Action Black

Action Black, is the title of one of my core methodologies that places paint into the world before it enters the studio. Paint is applied to vinyl floorboards and placed into spaces where viewers are allowed to step on and write on the floorboards. The dried paint on the vinyl creates a layer that can be later stripped and applied into canvas paintings or displayed in a sculptural form with the floorboards.  Rather than treating paint as a passive material, I understand it as an active participant that moves through conversations, celebrations, performances and other shared experiences. These encounters become materially embedded within the work, allowing painting to function as a record of lived experience rather than simply an image. 

This initial experience stage in the process I call Mayfly, and the experiences I put the paint through have been largely influenced by the 9 core things I felt made me happy whilst working through Royal Flush .
